Apperently Senator Maria Cantwell has disenfranchised the far left of her base voters for her authorization of the war in Iraq. This will likely give Republican challenger Mike McGavick a leg up in November's general election.

AFTER MEETING ON IMMIGRATION REFORM

The Roosevelt Room

THE PRESIDENT: I've just had a very constructive and important dialogue with members of the agricultural community, the faith community, the concerned citizen community about immigration. Ours is a nation of law and ours is a nation of immigrants, and we believe that we can have rational, important immigration policy that's based upon law and reflects our deep desire to be a compassionate and decent nation.

Our government must enforce our borders; we've got plans in place to do so. But part of enforcing our borders is to have a guest worker program that encourages people to register their presence so that we know who they are, and says to them, if you're doing a job an American won't do, you're welcome here for a period of time to do that job.

The immigration debate is a vital debate for our country. It's important that we have a serious debate, one that discusses the issues. But I urge members of Congress and I urge people who like to comment on this issue to make sure the rhetoric is in accord with our traditions. I look around the table and I recognize that we've got people from different backgrounds, different heritages. We all may have different family histories, but we all sit around this table as Americans.

And, therefore, when we conduct this debate it must be done in a civil way. It must be done in a way that brings dignity to the process. It must be done in a way that doesn't pit one group of people against another. It must be done in a way that recognizes our history. I think now is the time for the United States Congress to act to get an immigration plan that is comprehensive and rational and achieves important objectives.

So I want to welcome you all for being here. I want to thank you very much for your involvement in this vital issue. I've assured folks here at the table that I will continue to speak out on the issue. I feel passionately about the need for our country to conduct themselves with dignity and, at the same time, enforce our border and treat people here with respect.

The Pope is visiting Washington, and President Bush takes him out for an afternoon on the Potomac,
sailing on the Presidential yacht. They're admiring the sights, when all of a sudden the Pope's hat blows off his head and out into the water.

The Secret Service guys start to launch a boat to get the hat, but president Bush waves them off, saying, "Wait, wait, - I'll take care of this. Don't worry."

Bush then steps off the yacht onto the surface of the water, walks out to the Holy Father's hat, bends over picks it up, then walks back to the yacht and climbs aboard. He hands the hat to the Pope amid stunned silence.

I would have written about this yesterday, but unlike the rest of the country, I actually was trying to observe the holiday. Shy of a History channel marathon and an onslaught of mattress/vehicle/carpet sales one would be hard pressed to find eveidence that the day held some special importance in the hearts and minds of Americans.

How desperate we are for heros at this point in our culture, and yet how quickly we dismiss some of the greatest military and cultural heros of this great American experiment.

I am disappointed.

STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
As Prepared For Delivery

Mr. Speaker, Vice President Cheney, Members of Congress, Members of the Supreme Court and diplomatic corps, distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:

Today our Nation lost a beloved, graceful, courageous woman who called America to its founding ideals and carried on a noble dream. Tonight we are comforted by the hope of a glad reunion with the husband who was taken from her so long ago, and we are grateful for the good life of Coretta Scott King.

Each time I am invited to this rostrum, I am humbled by the privilege, and mindful of the history we have seen together. We have gathered under this Capitol dome in moments of national mourning and national achievement. We have served America through one of the most consequential periods of our history – and it has been my honor to serve with you.

In a system of two parties, two chambers, and two elected branches, there will always be differences and debate. But even tough debates can be conducted in a civil tone, and our differences cannot be allowed to harden into anger. To confront the great issues before us, we must act in a spirit of good will and respect for one another – and I will do my part. Tonight the state of our Union is strong – and together we will make it stronger.

In this decisive year, you and I will make choices that determine both the future and the character of our country. We will choose to act confidently in pursuing the enemies of freedom – or retreat from our duties in the hope of an easier life. We will choose to build our prosperity by leading the world economy – or shut ourselves off from trade and opportunity. In a complex and challenging time, the road of isolationism and protectionism may seem broad and inviting – yet it ends in danger and decline. The only way to protect our people … the only way to secure the peace … the only way to control our destiny is by our leadership – so the United States of America will continue to lead.

Abroad, our Nation is committed to an historic, long-term goal – we seek the end of tyranny in our world. Some dismiss that goal as misguided idealism. In reality, the future security of America depends on it. On September 11th, 2001, we found that problems originating in a failed and oppressive state seven thousand miles away could bring murder and destruction to our country. Dictatorships shelter terrorists, feed resentment and radicalism, and seek weapons of mass destruction. Democracies replace resentment with hope, respect the rights of their citizens and their neighbors, and join the fight against terror. Every step toward freedom in the world makes our country safer, and so we will act boldly in freedom’s cause.

Far from being a hopeless dream, the advance of freedom is the great story of our time. In 1945, there were about two dozen lonely democracies on Earth. Today, there are 122. And we are writing a new chapter in the story of self-government – with women lining up to vote in Afghanistan … and millions of Iraqis marking their liberty with purple ink … and men and women from Lebanon to Egypt debating the rights of individuals and the necessity of freedom. At the start of 2006, more than half the people of our world live in democratic nations. And we do not forget the other half – in places like Syria, Burma, Zimbabwe, North Korea, and Iran – because the demands of justice, and the peace of this world, require their freedom as well.

No one can deny the success of freedom, but some men rage and fight against it. And one of the main sources of reaction and opposition is radical Islam – the perversion by a few of a noble faith into an ideology of terror and death. Terrorists like bin Laden are serious about mass murder – and all of us must take their declared intentions seriously. They seek to impose a heartless system of totalitarian control throughout the Middle East, and arm themselves with weapons of mass murder. Their aim is to seize power in Iraq, and use it as a safe haven to launch attacks against America and the world. Lacking the military strength to challenge us directly, the terrorists have chosen the weapon of fear. When they murder children at a school in Beslan … or blow up commuters in London … or behead a bound captive … the terrorists hope these horrors will break our will, allowing the violent to inherit the Earth. But they have miscalculated: We love our freedom, and we will fight to keep it.

In a time of testing, we cannot find security by abandoning our commitments and retreating within our borders. If we were to leave these vicious attackers alone, they would not leave us alone. They would simply move the battlefield to our own shores. There is no peace in retreat. And there is no honor in retreat. By allowing radical Islam to work its will – by leaving an assaulted world to fend for itself – we would signal to all that we no longer believe in our own ideals, or even in our own courage. But our enemies and our friends can be certain: The United States will not retreat from the world, and we will never surrender to evil.

America rejects the false comfort of isolationism. We are the Nation that saved liberty in Europe, and liberated death camps, and helped raise up democracies, and faced down an evil empire. Once again, we accept the call of history to deliver the oppressed, and move this world toward peace.

We remain on the offensive against terror networks. We have killed or captured many of their leaders – and for the others, their day will come.

We remain on the offensive in Afghanistan – where a fine president and national assembly are fighting terror while building the institutions of a new democracy.

And we are on the offensive in Iraq, with a clear plan for victory. First, we are helping Iraqis build an inclusive government, so that old resentments will be eased, and the insurgency marginalized. Second, we are continuing reconstruction efforts, and helping the Iraqi government to fight corruption and build a modern economy, so all Iraqis can experience the benefits of freedom. Third, we are striking terrorist targets while we train Iraqi forces that are increasingly capable of defeating the enemy. Iraqis are showing their courage every day, and we are proud to be their allies in the cause of freedom.

Our work in Iraq is difficult, because our enemy is brutal. But that brutality has not stopped the dramatic progress of a new democracy. In less than three years, that nation has gone from dictatorship, to liberation, to sovereignty, to a constitution, to national elections. At the same time, our coalition has been relentless in shutting off terrorist infiltration, clearing out insurgent strongholds, and turning over territory to Iraqi security forces. I am confident in our plan for victory … I am confident in the will of the Iraqi people … I am confident in the skill and spirit of our military. Fellow citizens, we are in this fight to win, and we are winning.

The road of victory is the road that will take our troops home. As we make progress on the ground, and Iraqi forces increasingly take the lead, we should be able to further decrease our troop levels – but those decisions will be made by our military commanders, not by politicians in Washington, D.C.

Our coalition has learned from experience in Iraq. We have adjusted our military tactics and changed our approach to reconstruction. Along the way, we have benefited from responsible criticism and counsel offered by Members of Congress of both parties. In the coming year, I will continue to reach out and seek your good advice.

Yet there is a difference between responsible criticism that aims for success, and defeatism that refuses to acknowledge anything but failure. Hindsight alone is not wisdom. And second-guessing is not a strategy.

With so much in the balance, those of us in public office have a duty to speak with candor. A sudden withdrawal of our forces from Iraq would abandon our Iraqi allies to death and prison … put men like bin Laden and Zarqawi in charge of a strategic country … and show that a pledge from America means little. Members of Congress: however we feel about the decisions and debates of the past, our Nation has only one option: We must keep our word, defeat our enemies, and stand behind the American military in its vital mission.

Our men and women in uniform are making sacrifices – and showing a sense of duty stronger than all fear. They know what it is like to fight house to house in a maze of streets … to wear heavy gear in the desert heat … to see a comrade killed by a roadside bomb. And those who know the costs also know the stakes. Marine Staff Sergeant Dan Clay was killed last month fighting the enemy in Fallujah. He left behind a letter to his family, but his words could just as well be addressed to every American. Here is what Dan wrote: “I know what honor is. It has been an honor to protect and serve all of you. I faced death with the secure knowledge that you would not have to…. Never falter! Don’t hesitate to honor and support those of us who have the honor of protecting that which is worth protecting.”

Staff Sergeant Dan Clay’s wife, Lisa, and his mom and dad, Sara Jo and Bud, are with us this evening. Our Nation is grateful to the fallen, who live in the memory of our country. We are grateful to all who volunteer to wear our Nation’s uniform – and as we honor our brave troops, let us never forget the sacrifices of America’s military families.

Our offensive against terror involves more than military action. Ultimately, the only way to defeat the terrorists is to defeat their dark vision of hatred and fear by offering the hopeful alternative of political freedom and peaceful change. So the United States of America supports democratic reform across the broader Middle East. Elections are vital – but they are only the beginning. Raising up a democracy requires the rule of law, protection of minorities, and strong, accountable institutions that last longer than a single vote. The great people of Egypt have voted in a multi-party presidential election – and now their government should open paths of peaceful opposition that will reduce the appeal of radicalism. The Palestinian people have voted in elections – now the leaders of Hamas must recognize Israel, disarm, reject terrorism, and work for lasting peace. Saudi Arabia has taken the first steps of reform – now it can offer its people a better future by pressing forward with those efforts. Democracies in the Middle East will not look like our own, because they will reflect the traditions of their own citizens. Yet liberty is the future of every nation in the Middle East, because liberty is the right and hope of all humanity.

The same is true of Iran, a nation now held hostage by a small clerical elite that is isolating and repressing its people. The regime in that country sponsors terrorists in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon – and that must come to an end. The Iranian government is defying the world with its nuclear ambitions – and the nations of the world must not permit the Iranian regime to gain nuclear weapons. America will continue to rally the world to confront these threats. And tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran: America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our Nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran.

To overcome dangers in our world, we must also take the offensive by encouraging economic progress, fighting disease, and spreading hope in hopeless lands. Isolationism would not only tie our hands in fighting enemies, it would keep us from helping our friends in desperate need. We show compassion abroad because Americans believe in the God-given dignity and worth of a villager with HIV/AIDS, or an infant with malaria, or a refugee fleeing genocide, or a young girl sold into slavery. We also show compassion abroad because regions overwhelmed by poverty, corruption, and despair are sources of terrorism, organized crime, human trafficking, and the drug trade.

In recent years, you and I have taken unprecedented action to fight AIDS and malaria, expand the education of girls, and reward developing nations that are moving forward with economic and political reform. For people everywhere, the United States is a partner for a better life. Short-changing these efforts would increase the suffering and chaos of our world, undercut our long-term security, and dull the conscience of our country. I urge Members of Congress to serve the interests of America by showing the compassion of America.

Our country must also remain on the offensive against terrorism here at home. The enemy has not lost the desire or capability to attack us. Fortunately, this Nation has superb professionals in law enforcement, intelligence, the military, and homeland security. These men and women are dedicating their lives to protecting us all, and they deserve our support and our thanks. They also deserve the same tools they already use to fight drug trafficking and organized crime – so I ask you to reauthorize the Patriot Act.

It is said that prior to the attacks of September 11th, our government failed to connect the dots of the conspiracy. We now know that two of the hijackers in the United States placed telephone calls to al-Qaida operatives overseas. But we did not know about their plans until it was too late. So to prevent another attack – based on authority given to me by the Constitution and by statute – I have authorized a terrorist surveillance program to aggressively pursue the international communications of suspected al-Qaida operatives and affiliates to and from America. Previous presidents have used the same constitutional authority I have – and Federal courts have approved the use of that authority. Appropriate Members of Congress have been kept informed. This terrorist surveillance program has helped prevent terrorist attacks. It remains essential to the security of America. If there are people inside our country who are talking with al-Qaida, we want to know about it – because we will not sit back and wait to be hit again.

In all these areas – from the disruption of terror networks, to victory in Iraq, to the spread of freedom and hope in troubled regions – we need the support of friends and allies. To draw that support, we must always be clear in our principles and willing to act. The only alternative to American leadership is a dramatically more dangerous and anxious world. Yet we also choose to lead because it is a privilege to serve the values that gave us birth. American leaders – from Roosevelt to Truman to Kennedy to Reagan – rejected isolation and retreat, because they knew that America is always more secure when freedom is on the march. Our own generation is in a long war against a determined enemy – a war that will be fought by Presidents of both parties, who will need steady bipartisan support from the Congress. And tonight I ask for yours. Together, let us protect our country, support the men and women who defend us, and lead this world toward freedom.

Here at home, America also has a great opportunity: We will build the prosperity of our country by strengthening our economic leadership in the world.

Our economy is healthy, and vigorous, and growing faster than other major industrialized nations. In the last two-and-a-half years, America has created 4.6 million new jobs – more than Japan and the European Union combined. Even in the face of higher energy prices and natural disasters, the American people have turned in an economic performance that is the envy of the world.

The American economy is pre-eminent – but we cannot afford to be complacent. In a dynamic world economy, we are seeing new competitors like China and India. This creates uncertainty, which makes it easier to feed people’s fears. And so we are seeing some old temptations return. Protectionists want to escape competition, pretending that we can keep our high standard of living while walling off our economy. Others say that the government needs to take a larger role in directing the economy, centralizing more power in Washington and increasing taxes. We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy – even though this economy could not function without them. All these are forms of economic retreat, and they lead in the same direction – toward a stagnant and second-rate economy.

Tonight I will set out a better path – an agenda for a Nation that competes with confidence – an agenda that will raise standards of living and generate new jobs. Americans should not fear our economic future, because we intend to shape it.

Keeping America competitive begins with keeping our economy growing. And our economy grows when Americans have more of their own money to spend, save, and invest. In the last five years, the tax relief you passed has left 880 billion dollars in the hands of American workers, investors, small businesses, and families – and they have used it to help produce more than four years of uninterrupted economic growth. Yet the tax relief is set to expire in the next few years. If we do nothing, American families will face a massive tax increase they do not expect and will not welcome.

Because America needs more than a temporary expansion, we need more than temporary tax relief. I urge the Congress to act responsibly, and make the tax cuts permanent.

Keeping America competitive requires us to be good stewards of tax dollars. Every year of my presidency, we have reduced the growth of non-security discretionary spending – and last year you passed bills that cut this spending. This year my budget will cut it again, and reduce or eliminate more than 140 programs that are performing poorly or not fulfilling essential priorities. By passing these reforms, we will save the American taxpayer another 14 billion dollars next year – and stay on track to cut the deficit in half by 2009. I am pleased that Members of Congress are working on earmark reform – because the Federal budget has too many special interest projects. And we can tackle this problem together, if you pass the line-item veto.

We must also confront the larger challenge of mandatory spending, or entitlements. This year, the first of about 78 million Baby Boomers turn 60, including two of my Dad’s favorite people – me, and President Bill Clinton. This milestone is more than a personal crisis – it is a national challenge. The retirement of the Baby Boom generation will put unprecedented strains on the Federal government. By 2030, spending for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid alone will be almost 60 percent of the entire Federal budget. And that will present future Congresses with impossible choices – staggering tax increases, immense deficits, or deep cuts in every category of spending.

Congress did not act last year on my proposal to save Social Security, yet the rising cost of entitlements is a problem that is not going away – and with every year we fail to act, the situation gets worse. So tonight, I ask you to join me in creating a commission to examine the full impact of Baby Boom retirements on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. This commission should include Members of Congress of both parties, and offer bipartisan answers. We need to put aside partisan politics, work together, and get this problem solved.

Keeping America competitive requires us to open more markets for all that Americans make and grow. One out of every five factory jobs in America is related to global trade, and we want people everywhere to buy American. With open markets and a level playing field, no one can out-produce or out-compete the American worker.

Keeping America competitive requires an immigration system that upholds our laws, reflects our values, and serves the interests of our economy. Our Nation needs orderly and secure borders. To meet this goal, we must have stronger immigration enforcement and border protection. And we must have a rational, humane guest worker program that rejects amnesty … allows temporary jobs for people who seek them legally … and reduces smuggling and crime at the border.

Keeping America competitive requires affordable health care. Our government has a responsibility to help provide health care for the poor and the elderly, and we are meeting that responsibility. For all Americans, we must confront the rising cost of care … strengthen the doctor-patient relationship … and help people afford the insurance coverage they need. We will make wider use of electronic records and other health information technology, to help control costs and reduce dangerous medical errors. We will strengthen Health Savings Accounts – by making sure individuals and small business employees can buy insurance with the same advantages that people working for big businesses now get. We will do more to make this coverage portable, so workers can switch jobs without having to worry about losing their health insurance. And because lawsuits are driving many good doctors out of practice – leaving women in nearly 1,500 American counties without a single OB-GYN – I ask the Congress to pass medical liability reform this year.

Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. Here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world.

The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly 10 billion dollars to develop cleaner, cheaper, more reliable alternative energy sources – and we are on the threshold of incredible advances. So tonight, I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative – a 22-percent increase in clean-energy research at the Department of Energy, to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants; revolutionary solar and wind technologies; and clean, safe nuclear energy.

We must also change how we power our automobiles. We will increase our research in better batteries for hybrid and electric cars, and in pollution-free cars that run on hydrogen. We will also fund additional research in cutting-edge methods of producing ethanol, not just from corn but from wood chips, stalks, or switch grass. Our goal is to make this new kind of ethanol practical and competitive within six years. Breakthroughs on this and other new technologies will help us reach another great goal: to replace more than 75 percent of our oil imports from the Middle East by 2025. By applying the talent and technology of America, this country can dramatically improve our environment … move beyond a petroleum-based economy … and make our dependence on Middle Eastern oil a thing of the past.

And to keep America competitive, one commitment is necessary above all: We must continue to lead the world in human talent and creativity. Our greatest advantage in the world has always been our educated, hard-working, ambitious people – and we are going to keep that edge. Tonight I announce the American Competitiveness Initiative, to encourage innovation throughout our economy, and to give our Nation’s children a firm grounding in math and science.

First: I propose to double the Federal commitment to the most critical basic research programs in the physical sciences over the next ten years. This funding will support the work of America’s most creative minds as they explore promising areas such as nanotechnology, supercomputing, and alternative energy sources.

Second: I propose to make permanent the research and development tax credit, to encourage bolder private-sector investment in technology. With more research in both the public and private sectors, we will improve our quality of life – and ensure that America will lead the world in opportunity and innovation for decades to come.

Third: We need to encourage children to take more math and science, and make sure those courses are rigorous enough to compete with other nations. We have made a good start in the early grades with the No Child Left Behind Act, which is raising standards and lifting test scores across our country. Tonight I propose to train 70,000 high school teachers, to lead advanced-placement courses in math and science … bring 30,000 math and science professionals to teach in classrooms … and give early help to students who struggle with math, so they have a better chance at good, high-wage jobs. If we ensure that America’s children succeed in life, they will ensure that America succeeds in the world.

Preparing our Nation to compete in the world is a goal that all of us can share. I urge you to support the American Competitiveness Initiative … and together we will show the world what the American people can achieve.

America is a great force for freedom and prosperity. Yet our greatness is not measured in power or luxuries, but by who we are and how we treat one another. So we strive to be a compassionate, decent, hopeful society.

In recent years, America has become a more hopeful Nation. Violent crime rates have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1970s. Welfare cases have dropped by more than half over the past decade. Drug use among youth is down 19 percent since 2001. There are fewer abortions in America than at any point in the last three decades, and the number of children born to teenage mothers has been falling for a dozen years in a row.

These gains are evidence of a quiet transformation – a revolution of conscience, in which a rising generation is finding that a life of personal responsibility is a life of fulfillment. Government has played a role. Wise policies such as welfare reform, drug education, and support for abstinence and adoption have made a difference in the character of our country. And everyone here tonight, Democrat and Republican, has a right to be proud of this record.

Yet many Americans, especially parents, still have deep concerns about the direction of our culture, and the health of our most basic institutions. They are concerned about unethical conduct by public officials, and discouraged by activist courts that try to redefine marriage. And they worry about children in our society who need direction and love … and about fellow citizens still displaced by natural disaster … and about suffering caused by treatable disease.

As we look at these challenges, we must never give in to the belief that America is in decline, or that our culture is doomed to unravel. The American people know better than that. We have proven the pessimists wrong before – and we will do it again.

A hopeful society depends on courts that deliver equal justice under law. The Supreme Court now has two superb new members, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito. I thank the Senate for confirming both of them. And I will continue to nominate men and women who understand that judges must be servants of the law, and not legislate from the bench. Today marks the official retirement of a very special American. For 24 years of faithful service to our Nation, the United States is grateful to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

A hopeful society has institutions of science and medicine that do not cut ethical corners, and that recognize the matchless value of every life. Tonight I ask you to pass legislation to prohibit the most egregious abuses of medical research – human cloning in all its forms … creating or implanting embryos for experiments … creating human-animal hybrids … and buying, selling, or patenting human embryos. Human life is a gift from our Creator – and that gift should never be discarded, devalued, or put up for sale.

A hopeful society expects elected officials to uphold the public trust. Honorable people in both parties are working on reforms to strengthen the ethical standards of Washington – and I support your efforts. Each of us has made a pledge to be worthy of public responsibility – and that is a pledge we must never forget, never dismiss, and never betray.

As we renew the promise of our institutions, let us also show the character of America in our compassion and care for one another.

A hopeful society gives special attention to children who lack direction and love. Through the Helping America’s Youth Initiative, we are encouraging caring adults to get involved in the life of a child – and this good work is led by our First Lady, Laura Bush. This year we will add resources to encourage young people to stay in school – so more of America’s youth can raise their sights and achieve their dreams.

A hopeful society comes to the aid of fellow citizens in times of suffering and emergency – and stays at it until they are back on their feet. So far the Federal government has committed 85 billion dollars to the people of the Gulf Coast and New Orleans. We are removing debris, repairing highways, and building stronger levees. We are providing business loans and housing assistance. Yet as we meet these immediate needs, we must also address deeper challenges that existed before the storm arrived. In New Orleans and in other places, many of our fellow citizens have felt excluded from the promise of our country. The answer is not only temporary relief, but schools that teach every child … and job skills that bring upward mobility … and more opportunities to own a home and start a business. As we recover from a disaster, let us also work for the day when all Americans are protected by justice, equal in hope, and rich in opportunity.

A hopeful society acts boldly to fight diseases like HIV/AIDS, which can be prevented, and treated, and defeated. More than a million Americans live with HIV, and half of all AIDS cases occur among African-Americans. I ask Congress to reform and reauthorize the Ryan White Act … and provide new funding to states, so we end the waiting lists for AIDS medicine in America. We will also lead a nationwide effort, working closely with African-American churches and faith-based groups, to deliver rapid HIV tests to millions, end the stigma of AIDS, and come closer to the day when there are no new infections in America.

Fellow citizens, we have been called to leadership in a period of consequence. We have entered a great ideological conflict we did nothing to invite. We see great changes in science and commerce that will influence all our lives. And sometimes it can seem that history is turning in a wide arc, toward an unknown shore.

Yet the destination of history is determined by human action, and every great movement of history comes to a point of choosing. Lincoln could have accepted peace at the cost of disunity and continued slavery. Martin Luther King could have stopped at Birmingham or at Selma, and achieved only half a victory over segregation. The United States could have accepted the permanent division of Europe, and been complicit in the oppression of others. Today, having come far in our own historical journey, we must decide: Will we turn back, or finish well?

Before history is written down in books, it is written in courage. Like Americans before us, we will show that courage and we will finish well. We will lead freedom’s advance. We will compete and excel in the global economy. We will renew the defining moral commitments of this land. And so we move forward – optimistic about our country, faithful to its cause, and confident of victories to come.

The President will talk about America’s leadership role in the world, and the importance of working together to better protect our country, support our troops, and advance freedom:

Have you ever been to the Grizzly Rose? If you have, you would know that it is a pretty big place. A huge dance floor, tons of seating and a handful of ulterior rooms.

Despite all that square footage, gubernatorial Candidate Bob Beauprez turned that place into a sardine can. I have been to a number of functions at the Rose, political and otherwise, and I have never seen it is packed as last night.

I heard a rumor of 2,000 RSVPs, but in all honesty, I think it may have been more!

More amazing then turning that crowd out was sending every one of them home believing in how much stronger, how much better we can make Colorado. Talking about real issues, and touching a lot of hearts, Bob Beauprez cemented his ability, his drive, and his dedication to the job before in him in the minds of that audience, and this writer.

Everyone from big time politicos, including the majority of the Republican delegation to the State assembly, to the ten dollar donors, to the die-hard precinct walking volunteer: we all rallied, united around one of the greatest men to ever step onto the Colorado political scene, and perhaps one of the greatest men I have ever known.

I recently quit smoking. I am happy with my decision. I'm happy because I made a decision that will benifit my health, save me money, and keep me from smelling like a burnt newspaper. I am also happy because it was my decision to quit.

It seems in the state governments rush to invade the lives of citizens, and the rights of free, law abiding business owners they have neglected to realize that smoking, like so many of the stupid unhealthy things people do is a choice.

If I want to allow people to smoke in my establishment I ought to have the right. If you don't enjoy the smell, or effects of second hand smoke I can give you a fool proof system for avoiding it: go somewhere else!

There are a plethora of smoke free establishments in Colorado. In every major population center, you can find equivelent establishments that cater to smokers or non smokers. There is thus no reason to interfere with the time tested pronciples of free markets in action.

If you really feel it appropriate to outlaw smoking in public you should also outlaw the sale of foods high in saturated fat, and cholesterol, you should outlaw the use of motorcycles on public roadways, and lets not forget banning alcohol from public places.

Governments role is not to pick and choose its way through lifestyle decisions of its constitutents. We would all be far better served if legislators spent more time finding ways to cut the bloated state budget, and less time trying to dictate behavior of the free peoples of Colorado. If I'm this angry after I quit smoking, you can only imagine how upset I would have been a few weeks ago!

When first reading articles about the massive stroke, and the condition of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon I was dumbfounded. I read the same sentances over and over in my head trying to overcome the initial shock, and find a better understanding of the situation.

The implication for the future of Israel are uncertain: more then liekly without its leader, Kadima will fold. Ohlmert will be unable to hold it, or power for long. But in that vaccum where will new leader emerge from? Will Labour finally find some ground on which to gain votes? Will Likud resolidify and find a message, putting Netenyahu at the reins of the nation?

Regardless of our feelings on Sharon, our prayers should be with him, he was a noble warrior for Israel, and for freedom.

Tragedy has consumed the news media in this country. The dispicable part of this theme is not that they report it, but how. Peggy Noonann addresses the immigration issue brilliantly in her WSJ Column this week. I encourage everyone to read it.

Ken Buck raised another important question this morning that I don't think I've heard from anyone else. It is likely that most of the crimes committed by illigal immigrants are commited on other illigal immigrants. One problem that exists is that we have whole communities of illegal immigrants who come here but for fear of being caught, do not report many of the crimes commited against them. The issue of illegal immigration is infinitely complicated and I think this puts yet another face to that complication because wether they are legal or not, we are dealing with people, who in many cases do not seek justice when they are wronged, living in perpetual fear.

Human Relations Commission on ICE

Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck attended the Weld Republican Breakfast this morning to deliver an awe inspiring speech in defense of his efforts to welcome an ICE office into Greeley. This comes on the heals of the Human Relations Commissions recommendation that the Greeley City Council reject a resolution to welcome an ICE office to our community.

Buck reiterated that the rhetoric surrounding this issue has become much more complicated than need be. Explaining that an ICE office would lower the bar allowing for DUI and burglary to be deportable crimes, Buck listed several specific examples of illegal immigrants who have repeatedly broken the law, until consequently, the result was an unnecessary loss of life.

Unfortunately, for our community, the proposed recommendations from the Human Relations Commission ignore the larger problem. Ken Buck, or anyone else for that matter, has never claimed that an ICE office will single handedly end crime in Weld County. Will it help? Yes. Can it potentially save lives? Yes. Would an ICE office result in mass deportation of immigrants who have broken no laws other than crossing the border illegaly? No.

I hope that the Greeley City Council can look past all of the rhetoric in opposition to the ICE office as well as disregard the Joy Breuer's and Joan Cox's of this community which is largely responsible for some of that rhetoric and get to the meat of the issue which is law enforcement.

I realize that it is becoming increasingly unpopular within the Republican party to discuss important social issues such as abortion. Our "big tent" encompasses both pro-lifers and pro-choicers (although I wonder what percentage of each. If anyone knows this I'd like to hear it). I welcome both sides of this argument into the party because I beleive that there are many other important issues for us to come together on such as holding unbridled government expansion at bay. However, from time to time I cannot help but discuss issues that are of utmost importance to me as a conservative. By me even mentioning this subject I realize I run the risk of being labeled a right-wing zealot by members of my own party...so be it.

The LA Times ran a story this morning about Dr. William F. Harrison, an abortionist from Fayateville, Arkansas who in his own words, is destroying life so that thousands of women can be "born again". Please read this story and draw your own conclusion. For me it is a sad glimpse into how far our society has degraded since abortion first became legal in 1973. The birth of a child is seen by many as a mere inconvenience. The thought of giving it up for adoption is seen as a cruel decision to force upon a young mother. The idea that actions have consequences means nothing anymore because we have devised and legalized a quick fix for all no matter what the reason is. Again, I urge you to read the article and come to your own conclusion, I'd love to hear feedback.

After reading this I had to wonder to myself why the religion police have not yet brought this holiday under attack. Is ICE DOA?

I went to the Weld County Republican Breakfast this morning. They didn't have a speaker so it was more of a "mingle hour." As can be expected the topic of the ICE resolution by the county commissioners came up. City Councilman Ed Phillipsen stood up and proclaimed the new ICE resolution D.O.A. He made note that the chances of an ICE office coming to Greeley in the near future are slim to none because the money is not available at the federal level. The proposed resolution merely paves the way for an ICE office sometime in the future, the idea being to leave a welcome mat for the time that funds do become available.

Phillipsen was largely concerned that the opposition had 600+ people show up to the council meeting to discuss the issue and "the only two people that showed up in favor of the ICE office are racist." See earlier posts to view the absurd statements put forward by the same two people at the Republican Study Committee meeting. Phillipsen continued by stating the importance that we not let such people frame our message. I could not agree more. I am optimistic that the next public meeting will bring out many more of our supporters on this issue.

The Republican Study Committee of Colorado held an informal hearing wednesday on the issue of illegal immigration, a hot topic that will likeley be a focal point of the 2006 and 2008 elections. Unfortunately the committee allowed the testimony of two people who did a severe diservice to the level of debate on such an important issue.

I along with many others feel that illegal immigration not only creates a serious drag on our economy but also presents a far greater threat to the security of our great nation. However, there is a message that works and then there is the message presented on wednesday by Greeley residents Joy Breuer and Joan Cox. I beleive that the message presented by these two only harmed the effort by many in this state to deal with a very serious problem. Breuer and Cox even had to be interupted at one point by state representative David Schulteis because of the direction that their testimony was headed.

"We do not have much time before it's taken over and when it's taken over, we are going to be in trouble," said Breuer, a counselor who has the Greeley for God ministry in Greeley. More than 600 people showed up at the Greeley City Council Meeting last night to protest the proposed resolution to bring an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office to Greeley. Many in the Latino community feel that an ICE office would divide the community, legal and illegal.

At the Weld County Republican Breakfast this morning, District Attorney Ken Buck made it clear that he was not apologizing for pushing the resolution forward. "This is about law enforcement, not racism," Buck said. It is unfortunate that so many people within the Hispanic community cannot see the benefit of an ICE office in Weld County. The purpose for such an office is not to round up people with brown skin to determine who is here legally and illegally. The purpose is to allow for the deportation of citizens who come here illegally and commit crimes.

I would also strongly agree with the guest editorial written by former District 6 school board candidate Jorge Amaya yesterday. Amaya urges Buck to also enforce the laws that would punish those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. The steady flow of illegals into Weld County would slow down if there were not jobs readily available for them.

Envision and 100

I have a confession to make. I voted in support of a tax increase on the November 1 ballot. I will say in my defense that I supported proposition 100 against my better judgment. It was a decision that I had wrestled with for weeks until finally the day came when my absentee ballot arrived. I filled out everything on the ballot. I checked my NO vote for Referenda C & D. I voted W.D. "Bill" Gillard for Mayor among other decisions when finally I came to the dreaded 100. For several days I tossed around the idea to just leave that one blank. Since I could not comfortably vote one way or the other I thought that I could just avoid the decision altogether and leave it blank. In the end, however, I could not allow myself to leave blank a decision that troubled me so much.

On the one hand, I had my strong conservative ideals to uphold. Smaller government and lower taxes were something I took pride in defending. On the other hand I had my own personal background to consider. Growing up with a brother with development disabilities is not something to be easily forgotten. I know first hand the cost that disabilities of all forms can have on the family unit.

The Greeley Tribune, in a house editorial presented their own synopsis of why 100 failed and where Envision should go from here. I now must admit, while I begrudgingly voted in support of 100, I do not think that I will be in support of any such measure in the future.

The real question for me is, what is the role of our government? I personally commend Envision for the work that they do. I think that they are truly providing a most remarkable community service to the most vulnerable among us. The quality of their work is not in question. The source of their funding is. It is estimated that Envision spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $30,000 in their quest for 100. Who knows how much they will spend on their next campaign for a similar mill levy.

My main problem with 100 has always been the fact that Envision has a fundraising budget of $0. The amount of money spent on the last campaign and the likely amount spent on the next could go above and beyond the compensation of a successful and competent fundraiser for one year. The chances are good that Weld County voters will once again turn down a mill levy that will forever fund a non-profit organization.

I would encourage Envision to explore the option of an aggressive fundraising effort. There is enough money in Weld to compensate the $3 million that 100 would have provided. Don't waste another dime on a questionable campaign. Start fundraising now to bring relief to the many citizens that desperately need the assistance.

Army Pfc. Tyler Ryan MacKenzie of Evans died on Wednesday, November 2nd while on duty in Iraq. He will be buried in Greeley tomorrow, Veterans Day. Unfortunately there is a group who is planning to protest outside of the funeral. Not because they are peacniks who feel that Iraq is an unjust war. No, they do not follow the stripes of Cindy Sheehan. This is the same group that protested the funeral of murdered University of Wyoming Student Matthew Shepard many years ago. It is the Westboro Baptist Church or WBC of Topeka Kansas.

They have currently been protesting the deaths of many fallen heroes. I don't want to waste my time explaining their logic, so you can read one of their picket invitations for the funeral of an Iraqi Veteran here. It is unfortunate that so many people feel the need to spit in the face of those who have sacrificed their lives to protect this country. My heart goes out to the MacKenzie family tomorrow as they not only have to deal with the grief of burying their son but also the unnecessary torment that will be brought on by senseless picketers who have somehow linked homosexuality in America to the death of our soldiers abroad. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Governor Owens is attempting to preserve his "conservative" legacy by stating his case to conservative think tanks throught out the country. Owens mailed a letter to more than 100 conservative think tanks defending his role in the implementation of Referenda C & D. I don't think the letter will move the hearts and minds of most conservative think tanks. Referenda C & D ignores the real problems facing Colorado’s current fiscal situation. Sure, a $6 billion tax grab loosens the collar a bit and relieves part of the financial pinch but it only puts a band-aid on a much larger problem.

Illegal immigration takes a continuous toll on Colorado each and every day by deteriorating the financial fiber of this great state. Because of the fact that our southern border is so porous, it is difficult to know exactly how many illegal immigrants live within Colorado, thus making it difficult to determine the exact financial toll that our state takes. Loose estimates, however, tell us that the bill is extravagant.

The annual cost is roughly estimated at $564 million to our education system, $30+ million on healthcare and another $14 million to our prison system. These numbers are extravagant and yet there is currently not even the slightest discussion on how to remedy such a problem. While the state roughly spends in excess of $600 million a year on services for people who are living here illegally, our state legislature is complaining about an exaggerated $400 million structural deficit. In the FY 2004-05 forecast, the Medicaid populations anticipated a 28% caseload increase to non-citizens.

I am fully aware that in the politically correct society that we live in today, I run the risk off being labeled a xenophobic Mexican hater. Let me tell you that I am not. I fully support legal immigration. I often wonder what other laws our system would allow to be continuously broken daily and do nothing about it. Since when do we allow political correctness to interfere with criminal justice?

Lest I remind you, that the term “illegal immigrant” refers to someone who has broken the law by crossing our borders illegally. I know it is difficult for many to accept the fact that illegal immigrants are criminals.

Consequently, should referendum C pass, millions of dollars will continue to go to the services of hundreds of thousands of criminals living within our state illegally. I would encourage all to think about that and then proudly vote “NO” on Referenda C & D.

Peggy Noonan wrote a good piece for the Opinion Journal about how Bush can save not only his own legacy but the conservative movement as well. What Noonan presents is constructive criticism as well as a certain empathy from someone who played an integral role in Reagan's presidency. Her concerns echo those of all conservatives. Her advice is excellent and I truly hope that it makes it's way to the President.

George W. Bush has guts. It's the big thing his friends and supporters cherish in him. He will withstand the disapproval of the world to do what he thinks is right. He'll do it when he's wrong, too. He often has too many pots on the stove, but he can stand the heat and he will stay in the kitchen.

The whole experience was summed up for me one day while riding the subway. The car was mostly empty until it stopped near the largest domestic government agency, what's now known as Health and Human Services around 5:00. A wave of people packed every seat, and from their age and dress as well as the location, it was obvious most were welfare-state employees on the way home from the office — people whose supposed profession was "caring" for "human needs."

At the next stop, a man on crutches got on; now here was a man with human needs. Yet I watched him make his way slowly, with difficulty, from the far end of the car, while not one of the healthy, well-dressed Caring Professionals got up to give him a seat. Finally he reached the back of the car, where I gave him mine. Though I didn't make a show of it, several people gave me dirty looks. It was as if such a minor act of decency had broken the unspoken social rule — Every Man for Himself — and held each of them up to shame. Only instead of hanging their heads guiltily, they were glaring resentfully.

This is what you get when government officially assumes the role of caregiver to the nation: You get not a more caring government, but a more callous "caregiver." To make matters worse, you get a more callous population. Among the evils of the welfare state is that it encourages people to think of caring for the needy as someone else's problem — to think "I pay my taxes, so I've done my part." The result is an attitude less like the Good Samaritan's than the Pharisee who imagines he's attained righteousness by living up to man-made rules.

This weekend I attended a Grassroots Leadership Institute put on by the Republican State Party. The guest speaker was renowned political strategist and grassroots trainer, Steve Wark from Nevada. The short seminar was excellent with a very good turnout of folks from both Weld and Larimer Counties. More than anything I am happy to see that the State GOP is finally on the right track heading into the 2006 election cycle. Having worked for the 96-Hour Victory Program last year, I see many needed adjustments and improvements to give us the best possible chance to win back the state house and senate. Victory in 2006!

The Rocky Mountain News released the first of a seven part series today that will detail the cuts that have been made and must be made to the Colorado Budget should Referendum C not pass. Perhaps I am jumping the gun on the rest of the series as I have not yet seen it, however, if the first part is of any inclination the next six parts will probably follow suit. To be fair, today's piece did outline arguments from both sides. The meat of the article (no pun intended) outlined the "draconian cuts" surrounding our starving budget. Here is the money quote, outlining the difficult task facing our overworked legislators should referendum C & D fail.

If Referendum C fails, there will be no money to revive programs that have been cut, said Henry Sobanet, the state's chief budget officer, who monitors the complex limits on state spending and the constantly changing estimates of income and outgo. He keeps a shelf full of Tylenol and Pepcid at his office door.

Fortunately, for Sobanet and our state legislature, nobody is holding a gun to their head, forcing them to take on this task. Yes, we elect them to go to the capitol and make difficult decisions. Many of them would rather attend coctail parties while the taxpayer continues to get screwed...it's much easier that way.

I'm tired of being told that the things I care about, and the things I save money every day to afford are not as important as the "immense, over-arching social good" that could be achieved if we just give the teachers union another billion dollars, or subsidize a little more then 400 million dollars in social services for illegal immigrants.

Americans work damn hard, and with the exception of our protective services i.e. military, police and fire protection, I don't think we are getting a dime on the dollar for our investment into this gluttonous bureaucracy.

I'm tired of being sold down the river by politicians so beholden to special interests that they are willing to pillage their own constituencies to bloat their campaign war chests.

People run around touting all the politicians who are saying what a good idea it is to give them more money: of course they think its a good idea. They also think you are an idiot who doesn't know how to spend your money. They have a name for people who promise the world for just a small pitance more, they're called con-men.

Far away, glad-handing and pocketing big, fat contribution checks in some fundraiser in Denver, Andrew Romanoff's ears just began to burn.

This weeks posting comes from Ben DeGrow over at Mount Virtus. Ben posted the following excerpt at Colorado Pols. I normally don't like long rant's on the Pols website, however, rarely are they as well thought out and informing as this. Way to go Ben!

…I beg someone to logically refute the following facts:

1. Colorado spends more per pupil in real dollars on K-12 education now than ever before. In fact, Colorado’s per-pupil spending was at an all-time high right BEFORE Amendment 23 was passed… and has reached an all-time high each year thereafter.
2. Colorado spends less than 58 percent of education dollars in the classroom. (Maybe it’s how we are spending the money, not how much….)
3. From 1992 to 2003, Colorado significantly improved its ranking on national test scores while its national ranking in per-pupil spending went down.
4. The reason Colorado’s ranking went down is because our per-pupil spending increases weren’t as big as the national average.

My goal for listing these surprising facts (of which there are many more) and the following discussion is to make some people read and think about a different point of view.

Maybe, just maybe, people who are opposed to unending spending increases for K-12 education care just as much as you about kids and schools. Maybe they believe in a sort of “tough love” that asks for school leaders to consider new, more effective ways of getting things done rather than just holding their hands out.

After all, public education’s central mission is to educate each child in the system to his or her fullest potential, not to provide jobs to adult teachers or administrators. Whose interests should we be looking out for first?

Maybe the teachers union isn’t evil, just misguided because many of its interests collide with what is best for students. Maybe educrats aren’t evil, just that the vast majority are so focused on protecting the status quo and their own interests that the only fault they can ever see is that there isn’t enough money - never enough. And maybe opposing their agenda from time to time doesn’t make you an enemy of education or someone who hates kids and/or teachers.

My proposal is to remold the public education system with constructive incentives that promote its central mission, maximizing the investments of taxpayers for the good of society. Education tax credits, charter schools, meaningful reforms of pay-for-performance and tenure, in tandem with streamlined and effective accountability measures - these point the way toward a better system. Continuing to feed the system with more & more money without promoting such reforms is not compassionate but naive.

Education funding and reform aren’t the only things to consider when voting for C & D - vote how you will - but those spreading the scare tactics about schools ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Schaffer Not Convinced by Yes Crowd

Weld Schools Fail to Perform

According to the Colorado Department of Education 32 Weld County Schools did not meet the 2004-05 requirements of the No Child Left Behind act. I am curious to know what the performance level of private schools within the state are. My guess is that they are higher. It will be difficult for Weld County to continue to grow at current levels if parents don't want to send their children to our public schools. The extra dollars granted by amendment 23 seem to have had little impact on the quality of education that our children receive.

The Larimer County League of Women Voters held a forum over Referenda C & D in Fort Collins on Thursday night. The forum consisted of much of the same from both sides, however, I was very surprised to hear fellow republican, State Senator Steve Johnson assert that Referendum C is "the only way that we can recover from the recession." Huh?

That's right, the GOP has officially run out of ideas. Well, at least some members of the GOP, many of which reside in Northern Colorado, unfortunately. I've heard the argument that the Democrat majority in the state legislature have us over a barrel, which may or may not be true. The bottom line is that there are other ways to fix the state budget, namely, prioritize the budget, cut out the fat, and fix the problem areas (i.e. Amendment 23, Medicaid and sentencing reform). C'mon Senator Johnson, don't allow yourself to get sucked into the pessimism that exists on the other side of the aisle.

The Purpose of the Party

While posting his response to the Weld County Executive Committee's resolution against Referenda C & D, Andrew Boucher offers a grim forecast for the future of a Republican Party that chooses to take a stand on important issues. Andrew has it right when he says that good people can disagree on issues. To say that the Executive Committee of the party has no right to take a stand on such an important issue is absurd. The tent of the GOP is big enough for it's elected officials but lets not forget who elected them. We the people of the party elected them and when we disagree, they ought to know about it. They serve to represent us and I think it's safe to say that an overwhelming majority of republicans oppose the passage of Ref. C & D.

Several of the members of the Weld executive committee went as far as to poll the members of the central committee that elected them to see what they thought of the resolution. Overwhelmingly, the members of the central committee supported the resolution and several of them even attended the meeting to voice their support for it. Not to mention about a half dozen "rank and file" republicans who also showed up to voice support for the resolution.

Members of the party have known for a month that this resolution would be brought forward at tuesday's meeting. Representative Hall and Senator Owen knew as well, yet neither one of them was present to argue their point of view. In fact, there was only one person at the meeting who spoke out against the resolution.

I would also contend Andrew's assertion that because of such resolutions being passed, fewer people will be willing to identify themselves as republicans. Should the party fail to take a stand on key issues then the term Republican will hold no meaning other than the (R) placed next to a name on a ballot. In closing I encourage you to read this short passage from the 2004 Republican Party Platform.

We believe that good government is based on a system of limited taxes and spending. Furthermore, we believe that the federal government should be limited and restricted to the functions mandated by the United States Constitution. The taxation system should not be used to redistribute wealth or fund ever-increasing entitlements and social programs.

Greeley Metro Area?

What we call Weld County, the Greeley Metro area to the U.S. Census Bureau, was the fastest growing metro area in the nation from 2001-2003. This is good news for Greeley after decades of an anti-growth attitude within city government. This news comes on the heels of an anouncement that Greeley will now hire an economic development manager.

Congratulations to the Weld County Executive Committe for becoming the fifth County in the state to formally come out in opposition to Referenda C & D. The Resolution was passed by an overwhelming majority 23-3. This might come as a surprise to some since there are several elected Republicans within Weld County who support the Referenda, namely, State Senator Dave Owen, State Representatives Dale Hall and Diane Hoppe. All the more reason to congratulate the Executive Committee for taking a stand and sticking to the party platform.

I know as well as most that there are tenuous relationships in the world of politics, but Jon and I did not create this blog as a way for people to tear down Boucher or anybody else. Personally I have no problems with Boucher, I don't agree with him on some issues, but in 42 days we are all back on the same side: I think we would all be wise to remember that.

I'll admit I've made caustic remarks to people, but I believe its far better to make those criticism in person: some people call me honest, some people call me a jerk, both are acceptable.

If you have a problem with someone, it is definitely your right to air that grievance, but as one of the hosts of this sight, I am asking that you do not do it here. True, I have a tendency to use hyperbole, but it doesn't connote a contempt or ill will, only an emotional response which I feel validated in having. "Are you drunk," could be said less harshly as "you can't really believe that," but my pension for the verbose leads me to the more provocative of those two options.

I think we can have charged political discourse, without deteriorating into personal attacks, I hope that we can all agree on that. If not, lets at least pick on Democrats....

Vote Centers Get a Test Drive

Weld County residents were invited to the New Frontier Building in Greeley on Monday to practice voting with the new voting centers. The voting centers replace precinct polling places. Larimer County first implemented the voting centers last year. The use of such centers is likely to spread throughout the state and country.

It has been almost nine years since my brother David lost his lifelong battle to Muscular Dystrophy and 12 years since my cousin Chance lost his battle to Cerebral Palsy. Growing up with two family members with severe disabilities, my brother’s physical and my cousin’s mental and physical, was not easy. It was surely not easy to stand by helpless to the disease that slowly deteriorated their bodies. I can empathize with those families who must raise kids with special needs I can empathize with the cost that those families must endure so that their children can enjoy life to its fullest.

Having said that, I am offended and disturbed at the latest tactics by the proponents of Referenda C & D. I could not in my own mind justify their exploitation of several mentally and physically handicapped children at a capital rally. I will not hide my opposition to Referenda C & D. I am strongly opposed to it and I proudly state that. I would never, however, exploit the most vulnerable among us in a pathetic attempt for political gain.

What I saw on Thursday was several handicapped children who clearly did not want to be there or had no knowledge of why they were there, have a sticker slapped on their chest and paraded in front of the cameras like some side show. I did not know that the proponents of Referenda C & D were capable of stooping to such levels.

Personally, I was offended. If you support the Referenda then fine, campaign for it and donate money to that cause. This is America and we can have that debate. Please, let’s avoid the despicable actions that took place on Thursday. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Opposing Tax Increases a Nobel Idea

Milton Friedman, winner of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Economic Science opposes Referendum C. Friedman believes that Ref. C is bad for Colorado's economy. "I strongly urge the voters of Colorado to reject Referendum C, or any action that would suspend Colorado's Taxpayers Bill of Rights. I strongly favor the continued and uninterrupted use of TABOR, including it's so called ratchet mechanism. The ratchet is one of the best features of TABOR. A Day to Remember

It is important for us to remember the significance of this date to our nations history. It is important for us to recall how we felt on this day four years ago. What were our first thoughts? What emotions did they invoke in the following hours, days and weeks. Many in this country have forgotten. They no longer see the importance or relevance of the war on terror. They will not see its importance until the day, God forbid, that terrorists attack us on our soil once again. I hope and pray that such a day will never come. Reality, however, tells me that such a day is inevitable. Our plight to protect the homeland is only further hindered by groups such as the ACLU that prevent us from taking rational, common sense actions that would maximize our efficiency in this war. As we remember today the battle that our soldiers are fighting abroad, also remember our battle over ideals at home. It is our battle over ideals that will determine our effectiveness abroad.

State Representative Jim Riesberg (D-Greeley) looks for signs of the people he had hoped would show up for the Greeley rally in support of Referenda C & D. Unfortunately for him, only a few lonely souls made it out, half of them Greeley area press. On the other hand, many citizens managed to show up in opposition to the referenda. If these people can't competently throw a rally, then how do we expect them to competently spend our money.

Tribune Chastises Cooke

The Greeley Tribune chastised Weld County Sheriff John Cooke
and Undersheriff Margie Martinez yesterday for coming out against Referenda C & D. In one breath, the Tribune opinion accuses Cooke of using such scare tactics as calling Ref. C a tax increase. In the next breath they say that by opposing Ref. C & D, Cooke "could be marshaling the death of affordable higher education or mental-health programs that help innumerable Colorado residents." Huh...scare tactics?

The Yes On C-D "Colorado Walk" will land in Greeley tomorrow for a bbq and a rally. It should be no surprise that one of the scheduled speakers is UNC President Kay Norton. Norton, who has strayed from the examples left by Hank Brown has received a, 6% salary increase this year bringing her base salary up to $201,400 with a $40,000 per year housing allowance. Not to mention that nine top administrators earned bonues totalling $103,000 for the 2003/04 academic year. If Ref. C passes, perhaps you'll get another 6% salary increase Mrs. Norton.

Caldara Files Injunction On Referendum C Ballot Language

"Without Raising Taxes..." Those are the first three words of Referendum C on the November ballot. Jon Caldara, Chairman of the Vote No It's Your Dough Issue Committe, filed an injunction today against the legality of the language on the ballot.

Even the legislators who put Ref C on the ballot agree it’s a tax increase:
• “It is the biggest tax increase in the history of the state.” Rep. Angie Paccione (D – Ft. Collins), Fort Collins Collegian, Thursday, Sept. 1st, 2005.
• “It’s as simple as that: Yes, it’s an increase. It’s money that would go back to you.” Rep. Massey’s (R - Pueblo) comments before the League of Women voters Aug. 29th, 2005.
• It is a “tax and spend” referenda. Speaker Romanoff (D – Denver) April 18th, 2005 on the House floor during third reading of the measure.
